Network Schools Transition: Receive Information and Provide Feedback

December 22, 2016

On December 13, 2016 Orleans Parish School Board Superintendent Dr. Henderson Lewis Jr. notified OPSB board members, at their monthly meeting, that the administration has received expressions of interest from the current principals of OPSB’s five network schools to convert to Type 3 charter schools.  The schools are seeking to charter with OPSB for the 2017-18 school year.

In response to this announcement, Superintendent Lewis has stated “We welcome the opportunity to empower our network school leaders and their school communities to determine the best path forward and access the same financial resources and operational autonomy as other schools in the city enjoy.  I have full confidence in the leadership of our schools to make informed, student-centered decisions that continue to elevate the values of excellence, commitment, and tradition that these schools have already embraced.”

In order to answer parent questions, receive feedback, and provide clarity and guidance about the chartering process, OPSB partnered with the network school principals for a series of School Community Meetings, hosted by the school principal with attendance from OPSB leadership.  The School Community Meetings will take place at 6pm at the respective schools on the following dates:

Mahalia Jackson Elementary School – Wednesday, January 11, 2017

Benjamin Franklin Elementary School – Tuesday, January 17, 2017

Eleanor McMain Secondary School – Wednesday, January 18, 2017

McDonogh 35 High School – Monday, January 23, 2017

Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School – Wednesday, January 25, 2017
