Dr. Henderson Lewis, Jr.

Superintendent of Schools

Dr. Henderson Lewis, Jr. began his tenure as one of the youngest superintendents of the Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) on March 18, 2015.   Dr. Lewis brings 20 years of educational experience to the office of superintendent.  One of his biggest accomplishments as the OPSB Superintendent occurred during the summer of 2016.  Dr. Lewis worked with education leaders, state lawmakers, and the community to develop a plan to unify public schools in New Orleans by July 1, 2018.  This historical “Unification Plan” was approved by the Orleans Parish School Board and calls for several public schools that were taken over by the Louisiana Recovery School District following Hurricane Katrina to return to OPSB oversight.  The Unification Plan will help create a public education system in New Orleans that will be the first of its kind in the nation.

During his tenure as the superintendent of East Feliciana Parish Public Schools, Dr. Lewis achieved measurable growth and gains for the district with the support of East Feliciana’s Board, community, and other stakeholders.  As, a result of his four year strategic plan and leadership, East Feliciana was recognized in the 2012-13 school year by the Louisiana Department of Education as 2nd in the state for elementary student academic growth, raising the bar for classroom teaching and evaluation, and significant gains among low-income students.

Dr. Lewis has served the students and families of St Bernard Parish Public Schools as a mathematics teacher, mathematics department chair, and middle school curriculum coordinator. Additionally, he served as founding principal of Algiers Technology Academy, assistant principal of Alice Harte Elementary, and Director of Academics and Instructional Technology under the Algiers Charter Schools Association.

Currently, Dr. Lewis is serving his 3rd term and 11th year as a representative for District 9 on the St. Bernard Parish Public School Board.  Dr. Lewis holds a Bachelors Degree in Secondary Mathematics from Southern University at New Orleans, Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from the University of New Orleans, and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Educational Leadership from Mississippi State University.
