Einstein Charter Middle School Debate Team Takes Home Trophy At Regional Tournament
April 21, 2016
Debate team students at Einstein Charter Middle placed at the Regional Debate Championship Tournament held at Tulane University on Saturday, April 10th. Einstein Charter Middle competed against approximately fifteen schools and forty-two teams.
Students prepared arguments for both sides of the following five topics: criminalizing spanking, Russian intervention in Syria, whether the discoverer of an abandoned shipwreck should have title to its artifacts, ad-blockers on the internet and single-sex education in schools.
The tournament was open to middle school teams from private and public schools from across the nation. Einstein Charter Middle won the trophy for 7th place school. The Einstein team was the only open admissions charter school to receive a trophy. The award also has historical significance. This is the first trophy received by the new middle school (although not the first accolade.) Einstein Charter Middle opened in the fall of 2015 welcoming 6th – 8th grade for it’s first year. Principal Tiffany Cherrie says she can’t wait to display the first ECM trophy!
One student from the Einstein Debate team was recognized as “Best Speaker.” Yen Phan won 21st place out of 126 students.
The Einstein Charter Middle Debate team members who competed were 6th graders – Darryl Lagarde, Keenan Jiles, Romelo Harper and Daniel Moten – and 7th graders – Shanel Benjamin and Yen Phan. Team members Tai Nguyen and Herman Jacques supported their team during preparation time but did not compete in the tournament. Jared Fries and Pierce Jones coach the team.
