Orleans Parish School Board approves new committee appoints and addresses school safety measures currently underway

Board Approves New CEA to Develop Recreational Area at International High School, Supports Statewide Task Force to Address Teacher Shortage

At the February Board Business Meeting of the Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) the board addressed school safety in light of the recent shooting in Parkland, FL and was briefed on the administration’s work with the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) to provide training for school staff and police officers in the event of an active shooter situation. Additionally, the board approved new board committee appointments, voted to move forward with the development of a new recreational park at the International High School of Louisiana, and voted to support the state to create a task force to address the shortage of certified teachers. The board also honored retiring Warren Easton CEO Alexina Medley along with various outstanding students, including Posse Fellows and Student of the Year winners and nominees.


Superintendent Lewis Addresses Parkland Tragedy, OPSB Policy On Active Shooter Situations

In light of the recent tragedy, which took place in Parkland, FL last week, Superintendent Lewis took a moment during the board meeting to address the issue of school safety and update the board on ongoing plans with NOPD to increase training for crisis situations on school campuses.

Lewis went on to remind the board that the district works closely with school leaders and NOPD to develop crisis plans for each campus on an annual basis. Additionally, many schools conduct drills, which include lock downs and sheltering in place. Lewis stressed the importance of plans underway to finalize a CEA with the police department, which will enable additional active shooter training and drills.

CEA to Develop Recreation Area at International High School of Louisiana Approved

At the recommendation of the Property Committee the Board approved a CEA between the OPSB, the Recovery School District (RSD), the Downtown Development District (DDD) and the International High School of Louisiana for the establishment of a recreational park at the school site.


The CEA will allow for International High School of Louisiana to work with the DDD to transform a parking lot into a recreational park space that the school will be able to use during school hours. The public will be able to access a public park during non-school hours.  The OPSB will not incur any cost related to this project.


Board Supports State Task Force to Address Teacher Shortage

The board voted to approve Resolution 04-18, supporting the Louisiana State Association of School Personnel Administrators’ request that the Governor and/or State Legislature create a Task Force to address the shortage of certified teachers in the State of Louisiana. The resolution will urge the State Legislature to address barriers that restrict the ability of retired teachers to return to work.
