Orleans Parish School Board Completes Final Unification Milestone, Approves New Charter School Accountability Policies

Student Advisory Council Presents Recommendations for New Orleans Public Schools

At the Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) board business meeting on Thursday, May 17, the OPSB voted to pass policies to align with the finalized Charter School Accountability Framework. Additionally, the board moved to form an Early Childhood Education Working Group to provide guidance on expanding access to early childhood education to children and families in Orleans Parish.

Charter School Accountability Policies Finalized

The board passed revised policies for charter school evaluation and accountability to align with the launch of the Charter School Accountability Framework. The Framework ensures the OPSB is prepared to oversee school quality under a unified system. The approval of these policies is the final major unification milestone. The board thanks everyone who participated in this multi-year process that will result in more transparency and accountability for all chartered public schools in Orleans Parish.

Student Advisory Council Presents Recommendations for New Orleans Public Schools

Students from the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council presented their findings and recommendations to the board with regards to comprehensive student support services; fair, equitable and inclusive school culture; and discipline. The Council also offered insights into utilizing authentic platforms for student voice and representation. With over 30 members from across the city, the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council was created to advise board members on students’ vision for public education in New Orleans. The council also recommended that each school should embrace restorative and balanced approaches to behavior management as well as elevate and incorporate student voice.

 

Board Votes To Form Early Childhood Education Working Group

With the passage of this board item an Early Childhood Education Working Group will be formed. After completing extensive research, the Working Group will provide recommendations to the School Board regarding a strategy to expand access to high-quality early childhood education to families and children in Orleans Parish. Strengthening early childhood education availability and access is a core initiative for the OPSB.


Cooperative Endeavor Agreement and Amendment for Facility Improvements at Benjamin Franklin High School

The board also voted to authorize the OPSB administration to negotiate a Cooperative Endeavor Agreement (CEA) with Advocates for Academic Excellence in Education, Inc. (AAEE), to allow AAEE to build a press box and restrooms adjacent to the athletic field at Benjamin Franklin High School. Additionally, the board authorized an amendment to allow facility improvement at Benjamin Franklin High School.
