Orleans Parish School Board Gives Updates on Charter Applications and Approves Proposal for a Therapeutic Setting for Mental and Behavioral Health

McDonogh 35 Alumni Association, Pontchartrain Chapter of the Links, Inc. and OPSB Employee Dr. Armand Devezin Honored by Board

NEW ORLEANS – (July 19, 2018) – At the Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) board business meeting on Thursday, July 19, the board approved the Superintendent’s recommendations for the Spring Charter Applications as well as opened the Fall 2018 Charter Applications cycle. Additionally, this evening, the OPSB honored the McDonogh 35 Alumni Association, The Pontchartrain Chapter of the Links and longtime OPSB employee Dr. Armand Devezin, who is retiring.

Industrial tax Exemption Program (ITEP)
At the recommendation of the Budget and Finance Committee, the board voted to approve all applications for Industrial Ad Valorem Tax Exemption, according to criteria including the location of the applicant company’s capital project, the applicant’s commitment to job creation, and the completion status of the project.

Charter Applications Update
Today, the Orleans Parish School Board approved the Spring Charter Applications for KIPP New Orleans, a Type 1 Transformation charter school for grades PK-8, and Young Audiences, a Type 1 new start charter school for grades PK-8.

Proposal for Therapeutic Setting for Mental and Behavioral Health
The board voted to accept a proposal for Center of Resilience to operate a Therapeutic Setting for Mental and Behavioral Health. The term of the contract will be for one (1) year, beginning in September 2018, with a maximum of two one-year extensions to be awarded at the sole discretion of the OPSB. This will provide a therapeutic setting for behavioral and mental health needs for students and families attending public schools in Orleans Parish.

Pontchartrain Chapter of the Links, Inc. Honored for Rising Stars Program
The board recognized members of the Pontchartrain Chapter of the Links, Inc. for their Rising Stars Mentorship Program at McDonogh 35. The organization was recently awarded first place at its’ national conference for its work with the Rising Stars Program.
McDonogh 35 Alumni Association Recognized by Board for Dedication to Students
The OPSB honored the McDonogh 35 Alumni Association for its outstanding commitment to its students and families.

The OPSB Celebrates Retirement of Longtime Employee Dr. Armand Devezin
The Orleans Parish School Board celebrated the retirement of Dr. Armand Devezin and his service to Orleans Parish Public Schools for over 35 years.
The OPSB oversees 75 charter schools, two direct-operated schools and a school with two educational programs for students in secure care facilities.
